Understanding Backups
Since BaseReply is a “local-first” application, your data lives in your browser. This makes Backups the most important tool for ensuring you never lose your custom agents, prompts, or conversation history when switching computers or clearing your browser cache.
💾 Backups & Data Portability
Think of a Backup as a “Snapshot” of your entire BaseReply setup. It allows you to move your workspace between devices or recover your configuration after a system update.
What is Included in a Backup?
When you export a backup, BaseReply packages almost everything that makes your setup unique:
- Conversations: Your full chat history, including message timestamps, pinned threads, and which agent was used for each chat.
- AI Agents: Every custom agent you’ve built—their names, roles, and the complex “System Prompts” that define their personalities.
- Prompts: Your entire library of right-click context menu shortcuts.
- Knowledge Base Metadata: Information about which files you used for training and which agents they were assigned to.
- Settings: Your user preferences, UI toggles, and your Gemini API Key (stored with encryption).
⚠️ What is NOT Included?
Due to browser security and file size limitations, there is one critical exception:
- Physical Training Files: The backup does not contain the actual PDF or Word files themselves. It only remembers that a file named “Manual.pdf” was used.
- The Restore Step: After you restore a backup on a new computer, you will see your file list, but you must re-upload the actual files to re-enable the training.
